Stories Other Women Told Me

THOUGHTS ON POETRY:

It’s a big subject.

Is there any one of us who hasn’t dabbled in writing her own poetry?

Is there any one of us who hasn’t been stunned by something so moving that she is compelled to write it down in some form or other that ends up looking and sounding a little something like poetry?

Is there any one of us who hasn’t jotted down something on the edge of a playbill or a symphony program because a certain phrase passed through her thoughts and she didn’t want to lose that thread of insight?

Poetry s a big subject, a big palette, a hard task that looks easy, and we must not let our poems get away from us or lie dormant.

Whether anyone else ever reads our poetry or not, we must keep writing. Poetry is breath and bread and water. Poetry sustains us.
